Senior Independent Advisor – Disability Advisory Council
Our client is a large values-focused Federal Government Agency seeking an experienced EL2 Senior Independent Advisor to support the Independent Advisory Council with the development of high-quality advice, papers, submissions and recommendations.
This is a senior part-time role working closely with the Council’s Principal Member, Council members, reference groups and disability community stakeholders to shape advice on key issues affecting participants, families and carers.
ROLE DETAILS:
Location: Geelong or Melbourne VIC
Contract: 3 months initial term, with 6-month extension option
Hours: Part-time, 0.6 FTE (3 days per week – 7.5hr days)
Rate: $100.56 per hour + super
Eligibility: Australian Citizen required

ABOUT THE ROLE:
The Independent Advisory Council represents the voice of participants and provides advice to the Agency Board on key issues affecting participants, carers and families. The Council produces independent papers, reports and submissions that inform formal advice to the Board.
As Senior Independent Advisor, you will oversee the development of Council advice, work directly with members and reference groups, draft advice documents and support the annual workplan. You will also supervise and mentor two Independent Advisors.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead the development of advice, papers and recommendations for the Council.
- Work with the Principal Member, Council members, reference groups and stakeholders to scope advice topics and confirm recommendations.
- Write clear, plain-English advice in accessible formats.
- Support members and reference groups to contribute meaningfully to advice development.
- Facilitate discussions, gather feedback and support advice steering groups.
- Undertake research and analyse qualitative and quantitative information.
- Assist with Board papers, Ministerial submissions and correspondence.
- Support the annual workplan and help improve team processes.
- Supervise and mentor two Independent Advisors.
SELECTION CRITERIA:
- Experience writing high-level advice for government.
- Strong plain-English writing skills and understanding of accessibility requirements.
- Stakeholder engagement experience, ideally within the disability community.
- Disability knowledge and understanding of the social model of disability.
- Experience analysing qualitative and quantitative data.
- Strong Microsoft Office skills, including SharePoint, PowerPoint and Excel.
- Management or mentoring experience.
- Ability to improve processes and ways of working across a team.
HIGHLY DESIRABLE:
- Lived experience of disability.
- Qualifications or experience in disability, health or policy.
- Understanding of how the Government disability programs work for people with disability.
- Confidence working directly with diverse stakeholders in accessible and inclusive ways.
