About the Role
A federal government agency is initiating a transformation in its testing practices by establishing a greenfield test automation capability. This is a rare and strategic opportunity for an experienced Test Automation Specialist to step in and lead the development of automation strategies, frameworks, tooling, and processes.
You’ll be joining a supportive, collaborative environment where your leadership will directly influence quality assurance outcomes across multiple programs. As the organisation currently has limited in-house automation expertise, your role will be critical in both delivery and mentorship.
Key Responsibilities
-
Define and implement a Test Automation Strategy tailored to the agency’s environment and long-term objectives.
-
Select appropriate automation tools (the team has some past exposure to Selenium, but no tool has been mandated).
-
Design and develop scalable automation frameworks to support functional, regression, and integration testing.
-
Identify manual test cases and processes suitable for automation and lead the transition.
-
Write, maintain, and execute automated test scripts.
-
Generate and communicate test results, including reports and metrics, to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
-
Collaborate across geographically dispersed Agile teams, ensuring test coverage and quality outcomes.
-
Review business and system requirements to assess testability and develop clear, concise test plans and test cases.
-
Mentor and upskill existing team members (e.g., Test Analysts) in automation practices.
-
Participate in defect triage, classification, and escalation as required.
-
Ensure compliance with agency standards and contribute to process improvement.
Essential Skills and Experience
-
Minimum 6 years of experience in software testing, with strong focus on test automation.
-
Proven experience in designing and implementing test automation frameworks across different platforms and technologies.
-
Deep understanding of test automation tools such as Selenium, as well as experience evaluating and selecting appropriate solutions.
-
Prior experience working in Agile development environments, with knowledge of CI/CD pipelines.
-
Demonstrated experience in leading automation initiatives and coaching team members.
-
Strong test reporting and defect management skills.
-
Ability to liaise with stakeholders across technical and non-technical domains.
-
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Desirable Skills and Qualifications
-
Previous experience in the Australian Federal Government or similar regulated environments.
-
Familiarity with government security and assurance frameworks.
-
Experience in continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) and DevOps environments.
-
Tertiary qualifications in IT, Computer Science, or a related field (or equivalent industry experience).
Why This Role?
-
Greenfield project: Rare opportunity to build an automation capability from the ground up.
-
Strategic impact: Be the go-to expert, shaping long-term quality practices.
