Senior Systems Engineer - Software Design

Our client is a major federal government body who is looking for a Senior Systems Engineer – Software Design to support a major national program delivering and enhancing the National Technical Monitoring (NTM) system. This role will focus on software platforms, infrastructure, and system design within a complex, mission-critical environment.
You will work closely with engineering teams, vendors, and stakeholders to design and maintain secure, scalable, and resilient system platforms.
This is a 2-year fixed-term contract offering a competitive salary and annual bonus. To be eligible, you must be an Australian citizen with the ability to obtain Baseline security clearance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and support software infrastructure and system platforms
  • Manage and maintain virtualised environments (VMware vSphere, ESXi, vCenter)
  • Implement secure and resilient system architectures
  • Support disaster recovery, cybersecurity and access control frameworks
  • Investigate and resolve system issues across applications and infrastructure
  • Develop and maintain system documentation, standards and architecture artefacts
  • Lead system upgrades, improvements and technical initiatives
  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring and oversight across teams
  • Support system security controls and compliance requirements
  • Contribute to continuous improvement and platform modernisation

Requirements

  • Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, IT or related discipline
  • Must be an Australian Citizen and eligible for Government Security Clearance
  • Proven experience in software engineering, systems design or infrastructure engineering
  • Strong experience with Windows Server, Active Directory and Group Policy
  • Experience with VMware technologies (vSphere, ESXi, vCenter)
  • Strong understanding of infrastructure, networking and system integration
  • Experience designing secure, scalable and highly available platforms
  • Programming capability in Python, C++ or similar languages
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across systems, networks and applications
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work across multiple teams and manage stakeholders
  • Strong documentation and communication skills

Highly Regarded

  • Experience working with SCADA or operational technology environments
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity frameworks (e.g. ISM)
  • Experience supporting legacy systems or complex integrations
  • Exposure to large-scale transformation or infrastructure programs
