Our client is a federal government body who is seeking an experienced Senior Systems Engineer – Automation to support a major transformation program. This role will focus on the design, support, and enhancement of SCADA and control systems within a complex, safety-critical environment.

You will work closely with engineering teams, field staff, and stakeholders to ensure the reliability, performance, and ongoing improvement of operational technology systems.
This is a 2-year fixed-term contract offering a competitive salary and annual bonus. To be eligible, you must be an Australian citizen with the ability to obtain Baseline security clearance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, support and enhance SCADA, PLC, RTU and telemetry systems
  • Investigate, manage and implement system upgrades, enhancements and fixes
  • Ensure system performance, reliability and availability requirements are met
  • Develop and execute testing and deployment plans for system changes
  • Support field teams in resolving technical issues and deploying updates
  • Produce and maintain engineering documentation, standards and procedures
  • Lead technical activities across projects and operational support work
  • Provide mentoring, coaching and technical oversight to engineers and specialists
  • Support system security controls and compliance with safety standards
  • Contribute to continuous improvement and modernisation of systems

Requirements

  • Degree in Electrical, Mechatronics, Instrumentation or related engineering discipline
  • Must be an Australian Citizen and eligible for Government Security Clearance
  • Proven experience in automation, control systems or instrumentation engineering
  • Strong hands-on experience with SCADA, PLCs, RTUs and telemetry systems
  • Experience with industrial protocols such as Modbus, BACnet and SNMP
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical designs and control system architecture
  • Experience troubleshooting complex systems in operational environments
  • Programming capability in Python, C++ or PLC languages (e.g. Ladder Logic)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work across multiple teams and manage technical stakeholders
  • Excellent documentation and communication skills
