Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Python Developer Software Engineer to provide technical leadership and hands-on development for the re-platforming of a data processing application onto a modern, scalable platform. This is a part-time opportunity based in Dockland Melbourne on a initial 6-month contract with possible extension.

This role will suit a senior engineer or Tech lead who enjoys remaining hands-on while also providing technical direction, solution design, mentoring, and stakeholder engagement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical design and implementation of an application re-platforming initiative
  • Define the migration approach and develop Python solutions for complex data processing workloads
  • Design and develop data-intensive applications, ETL workflows, APIs, and microservices
  • Build data ingestion, transformation, validation, and processing pipelines
  • Apply modern software engineering, DevSecOps, CI/CD, testing, and automation practices
  • Conduct code reviews and promote clean code and engineering best practices
  • Collaborate with Solution Architects, platform teams, Project Managers, engineers, and business stakeholders
  • Support knowledge transfer and capability uplift across application support teams

Key Requirements

  • Successful candidate must be able to obtain a Baseline Security Clearance
  • Strong commercial Python development experience, including application design, optimisation, and troubleshooting
  • Proven experience as a Senior Software Engineer or Technical Lead on application modernisation or re-platforming projects
  • Strong understanding of object-oriented programming, design patterns, and clean code principles
  • Experience developing data-intensive applications, ETL pipelines, APIs, and microservices
  • Experience integrating databases, external APIs, messaging platforms, and enterprise systems
  • Strong knowledge of batch and real-time data processing architectures
  • Experience with CI/CD, Git, automated testing, release management, monitoring, and logging
  • Experience designing microservices, event-driven architectures, and API-first solutions
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to communicate technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Previous experience modernising or re-platforming legacy applications
  • Experience within large enterprise, government, or regulated environments
  • Strong understanding of security, authentication, authorisation, and compliance requirements
