Senior Protection and Control Engineer

Our client, a leading utilities company, is seeking an experienced Senior Protection and Control Engineer for an initial 12-month contract. This position is based in their Melbourne CBD office with a hybrid work arrangement. The successful candidate will have strong expertise in modelling system faults to determine fault levels, developing protection settings, creating relay configuration files, and reviewing protection designs for technical suitability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Model system faults and network behavior to determine fault levels and assess protection scheme adequacy.
  • Calculate and determine protection settings to ensure system stability, safety, and coordination.
  • Develop, test, and validate relay configuration files for protection devices across substations and networks.
  • Review protection system designs for technical accuracy, compliance, and operational effectiveness.
  • Perform protection coordination studies to ensure reliable fault detection and system isolation.
  • Support commissioning and testing of protection systems, including reviewing test plans and analyzing results.
  • Provide technical input during project planning and design phases, ensuring protection requirements are met.
  • Investigate protection operations and system faults, delivering root cause analysis and recommending improvements
  • Collaborate with planners, designers, and operations teams to integrate protection solutions into broader system upgrades.
  • Ensure protection systems comply with industry standards, utility regulations, and internal engineering policies.

Key Requirements

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, with a specialization in power systems or equivalent.
  • Extensive experience in modelling electrical faults and determining system fault levels.
  • Proven ability to calculate and apply relay settings for transmission or distribution systems.
  • Proficiency in developing and testing relay configuration files.
  • Strong understanding of protection coordination principles, including grading and selectivity.
  • Experience reviewing protection designs for compliance with utility and industry standards.
  • Knowledge of system modelling tools and fault simulation software.
  • Understanding of relevant standards and utility-specific protection guidelines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience in fault investigation and reporting.
