Senior IT Systems Engineer – NSW

Location: NSW (Hybrid – 2-3 days in office)
Contract: 8 months + up to 2 x 12-month extensions
Hours: 40 hours per week
Security Clearance: Baseline (mandatory; preference for current holders)
Experience Level: Senior / EL1 equivalent

About the Role

The Senior IT Systems Engineer will work within a small, collaborative team delivering both BAU and project-based ICT initiatives for a Federal Government program. The role requires a strong background in Microsoft technologies, hypervisor technologies, and IT security, with a focus on automating tasks, maintaining systems, and implementing security controls. The successful candidate must be proactive, adaptable, and able to work effectively in a hybrid environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administer Microsoft 365 Defender (Advanced Threat Protection) to monitor and respond to security alerts.

  • Develop and deploy Infrastructure as Code using Azure Bicep.

  • Manage and update Citrix Virtual Apps & Desktops and VMWare VDI images.

  • Automate IT tasks with PowerShell scripts to improve efficiency.

  • Manage Docker container deployments ensuring performance and stability.

  • Implement PSPF ISM or NIST security controls into system builds.

  • Administer SQL Server databases (backups, restores, tuning).

  • Configure and maintain Dynamics 365 environments (on-premise and cloud/PowerApps).

  • Support SharePoint environments (online & on-premise).

  • Track and manage tasks using Jira (Atlassian).

Essential Criteria

  • Strong experience supporting Windows Server and desktop environments.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Endpoint Manager (SCCM/Intune) and managing Windows OS environments.

  • Skilled in application packaging and documenting build processes.

  • Experience with Active Directory, DHCP, DNS, Group Policy, patch management, Office 365, and Azure tenancy administration.

  • Knowledge of VMWare infrastructure.

Desirable Skills

  • Administering Microsoft 365 Defender.

  • Deploying infrastructure as code with Azure Bicep.

  • Managing Citrix / VDI environments.

  • Automation using PowerShell.

  • Docker container administration.

  • Using Jira for project tracking.

  • Federal Government experience.

  • Administering SQL Server, Dynamics 365, SharePoint.

Qualifications & Experience

  • 6-7+ years of relevant IT systems engineering experience.

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.

  • Federal Government experience highly regarded.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a small team.
