Senior API Developer
- 12-month contract with extension options
- Canberra-based role
- Baseline security clearance required
Position Overview
An opportunity is available for a Senior API Developer to play a key role in the design, development, and delivery of secure, scalable integration solutions within a complex technology environment. This position sits within a technology delivery function and contributes to the transition of critical system integration capabilities in-house. The role will support the development of modern healthcare-focused APIs, ensuring interoperability, data integrity, and compliance with industry standards, while working collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality digital outcomes.
Key Duties
- Design, develop, and support secure, scalable RESTful APIs using Java-based frameworks
- Develop and maintain APIs aligned with HL7 FHIR standards to ensure system interoperability
- Implement robust authentication and authorisation mechanisms (e.g. OAuth 2.0)
- Build and enhance applications with a focus on privacy, compliance, and data integrity
- Develop, test, and maintain APIs including unit, REST, and performance testing
- Contribute to containerised deployments using Docker and Kubernetes environments
- Design and support CI/CD pipelines aligned with DevOps and GitOps practices
- Collaborate with stakeholders, vendors, and integrators on system integration and data mapping
- Apply DevOps principles to improve system reliability, monitoring, and auditability
- Support full application lifecycle including development, testing, deployment, and operations
- Contribute to continuous improvement of development standards, tooling, and practices
- Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and support to team members
Skills and Experience Required
- Strong experience in Java development and REST API design
- Demonstrated experience with HL7 FHIR and healthcare application development
- Experience implementing OAuth and secure API practices
- Proven capability in testing practices including unit, REST, and performance testing
- Experience with containerisation and deployment pipelines (Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD)
- Strong understanding of DevOps/GitOps processes, logging, monitoring, and audit practices
- Experience with API integration, including data mapping and transformation
- Knowledge of privacy, compliance, and regulatory considerations in system design
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and technical teams
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work with limited direction
- Understanding of issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and ability to communicate sensitively and effectively
- Australian Citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a Baseline security clearance and national police check
