Senior Advisor - Legal

  • New Zealand
  • Permanent
  • Negotiable

A fantastic role for a legal professional PQE3yrs+ to embrace and work in the fascinating world of media classification!

At Classification Office – Te Mana Whakaatu we prevent exposure to harmful content while upholding the right to freedom of expression and empowering New Zealanders to make informed choices about what they, and their rangatahi and tamariki, watch.

As our Senior Advisor – Legal you’ll provide legal advice and support across the organisation, and support the Chief Censor and Deputy Chief Censor to carry out statutory functions.

About the Role

You’ll be our first port of call for all things legal.

While based in the Corporate Services team your work straddles the organisation, providing advice and guidance on corporate/organisational matters as well as managing legal queries and advice within the classification arena.

This could include a broad array of work such as supporting the Deputy Chief Censor on the application of law in a classification scenario, an initial opinion on an enforcement agency enquiry, risk and compliance, or procurement of services and development of contracts.

You’ll engage with a wide range of external stakeholders including external legal teams, enforcement and government agencies, entertainment agencies, suppliers and the public.

With fascinating subject matter in an evolving landscape of how people engage with media, your sound and pragmatic legal advice plays a key role organisationally, and supports the work of the Chief Censor and Deputy Chief Censor.

About You

In addition to having a law degree and a current New Zealand practising certificate (or the ability to get one without delay), our ideal candidate will have:

  • at least three years’ legal experience post professional qualifications
  • experience writing high quality legal advice, documents and reports
  • excellent communication skills with an articulate, succinct tendency
  • a high level awareness of diverse media and the impacts of technology
  • the ability to switch between differing pieces of work with ease, and
  • a good degree of time management and commitment to deadlines.

While ideally your legal experience is via central government, we’re also interested in seeing applications from those in the social or community sectors or media and entertainment sectors. Key for this role is your ability to provide sound legal advice across a range of areas, and a desire to embrace the depth and breadth of the role.

Some of the material we classify can be personally challenging and while you won’t be exposed to all of it, you will need a strong level of personal resilience.
