Satellite Communications Engineer | GEO & NGSO Systems | Satellite Modernisation Project

  • Location: Canberra, ACT (Onsite)
  • Clearance: NV2 Security Clearance (Mandatory)
  • Contract Length: 12 months + 2 x 12-months extensions (Based on the discretion of the Department)

About the position:

Our client is seeking a highly skilled Satellite Communications Engineer to support the Satellite Modernisation Project, a multi-year initiative to uplift our client’s global satellite infrastructure. This program is transitioning legacy Geostationary Orbit (GEO) systems to modern Non-Geostationary Orbit (NGSO) technologies, enabling secure, high-performance, and resilient communications for global operations.

The role will involve end-to-end design, deployment, and maintenance of satellite communication systems across our client’s Posts worldwide, working closely with technical, cyber assurance, and regional engineering teams.

Key responsibilities of the position:

  • Design, implement, and maintain GEO and NGSO satellite communication systems.
  • Support high-level design, technology investigations, and deployment planning.
  • Integrate high-performance, low-maintenance satellite terminals across global Posts.
  • Contribute to the deployment of NGSO capabilities at pilot sites.
  • Maintain and support high-risk GEO locations.
  • Produce high-quality technical documentation, including HLDs and maintenance plans.
  • Collaborate with architecture, cyber, and regional technical teams.
  • Provide onsite support, including international and remote travel for deployment and maintenance.

What we are looking for:

  • Bachelor or Diploma in Electronics/Communications Engineering.
  • 5+ years’ experience in satellite communications engineering (GEO + NGSO).
  • Strong knowledge of RF and microwave communication systems – design, testing, optimisation.
  • Experience in WAN services and satellite-based connectivity across global locations.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to international/remote locations.

Desirable skills & experience:

  • Previous experience supporting government or defence satellite communications projects.
  • Ability to mentor and guide junior engineers/field technicians.
