The Role
This is a specialist Risk and Claims Officer opportunity within a well-established local government organisation, supporting the end-to-end management of a general insurance portfolio and a broad claims function. Reporting into the Risk and Safety team, you will own claims administration from lodgement through to resolution, maintain accurate reporting and data systems, and contribute to the ongoing development of the organisation’s risk management framework and business continuity planning. The role requires sound insurance and claims knowledge, strong stakeholder engagement skills, and the ability to manage competing priorities with discretion and accuracy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the end-to-end general insurance claims process, including documentation, evaluation, liaison with insurers, claims managers, and assessors, and monitoring settlement timelines to ensure prompt and compliant resolution.
  • Maintain and develop accurate records, reporting systems, and data management practices for all insurance claims, producing regular comprehensive reports that highlight trends and support management decision-making.
  • Support the development, implementation, and maintenance of the Risk Management Framework, including risk registers, business continuity planning, and operational risk policies and procedures.
  • Provide high-quality administrative support and timely advice to internal stakeholders at all levels, including senior management and relevant committees, on general insurance and risk management matters.
  • Coordinate insurance audits, assist in organising risk management training, and contribute to promoting a strong risk management culture across the organisation.

Skills & Experience Required

  • Demonstrated experience in general insurance claims management, including knowledge of claims assessment, insurer liaison, liability determination, and settlement processes in a complex or regulated environment.
  • Sound understanding of risk management principles and frameworks, with the ability to support risk register development, business continuity planning, and compliance with relevant legislation and regulations.
  • Well-developed administrative and data management skills, including experience working with databases, electronic document management systems, and producing accurate and timely management reports.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with internal teams at all levels, external bodies, and members of the public, exercising discretion and confidentiality at all times.
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in business, administration, or a related discipline, with demonstrated ability to plan and prioritise work independently and manage competing priorities to meet deadlines.
