Radio Frequency (RF) Engineer
Radio Frequency Engineer | Secure Communications & RF Systems Delivery
- Location: ACT-Based Only (Onsite)
- Security Clearance: NV1 (Mandatory) | NV2 (Preferred or willingness to upgrade)
- Contract Length: 12 months + 2 × (12-month extensions – Based on the discretion of the Department)
About the position:
This role operates within a secure telecommunications environment supporting critical RF communication systems. The position focuses on the design, integration, optimisation, and support of radio frequency solutions across domestic and international operational contexts.
You will work both independently and collaboratively to deliver reliable RF capabilities, ensuring systems are configured, calibrated, and maintained to meet operational and performance standards. The role combines hands-on engineering with structured documentation and fault resolution responsibilities.
What you’ll do:
- Design, implement, and support RF communication systems across UHF, VHF, HF, and microwave technologies
- Conduct system scoping, configuration, calibration, and performance tuning of RF equipment and software
- Diagnose and resolve complex RF system faults using advanced diagnostic tools and techniques
- Prepare and maintain technical documentation, including design reports, test procedures, and performance analyses
What we are looking for:
- Strong theoretical and practical expertise in RF engineering and RF systems design
- Proven experience delivering and supporting RF communication solutions in operational environments
- Ability to work effectively within cross-functional and geographically dispersed teams
- Clear technical communication skills, both written and verbal, across technical and non-technical audiences
Seniority fit:
- This role suits an RF Engineer who is confident operating across the full lifecycle of RF systems – from design and integration through to optimisation and support
- Ideal candidates bring strong diagnostic capability and the ability to manage system performance in real-world operational conditions
- Experience working within secure or regulated environments will be highly regarded
Technology & environment:
- RF systems across UHF, VHF, HF, and microwave communications
- RF diagnostic, calibration, and testing tools and equipment
- Integration of RF hardware, firmware, and communication protocols
- Secure, standards-driven federal telecommunications environments
A quick note before you apply:
- This role requires hands-on RF engineering experience across design, integration, and operational support, it is not a coordination-only position
- An active NV1 security clearance is mandatory; candidates with NV2 or willingness to upgrade are strongly preferred
- The position is fully onsite in Canberra and may involve travel depending on operational requirements
- Experience with satellite communications will be considered advantageous
