Project Engineer – Mechanical / Hydraulics (Heavy Industry)
Location: Wollongong, NSW
Contract: 12-Month Hourly Rate (Highly Likely to Extend)
About the Project
Join a major capital development initiative – Project Prime – within a leading heavy industrial manufacturing organisation. This is a hands-on engineering role where you will contribute to the successful delivery of hydraulic and mechanical systems across design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and operational readiness phases.
Role Overview
The Hydraulics / Mechanical Project Engineer is responsible for delivering assigned work packages safely, on schedule, and within budget. You will coordinate engineering design, tendering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and handover activities while maintaining high standards of HSE compliance and project governance.
Key Responsibilities

Develop scopes of work and customer requirements specifications for hydraulic and mechanical systems.

Lead tendering, procurement, and contract administration processes for assigned work packages.

Participate in engineering design reviews, including P&IDs, mechanical drawings, and hydraulic system layouts.

Ensure safety and environmental compliance across all project activities, contributing to audits, HAZOPs, SIL, and risk assessments.

Collaborate with construction, commissioning, and operations teams to ensure timely and accurate delivery of engineering outputs.

Manage project cost, schedule, and risks, including documenting and controlling risks in alignment with project standards.

Provide technical and contractual support during construction, commissioning, and defects/rectification phases.

Assist with operational readiness, including development of maintenance, training, and operational documentation.
Key Requirements
-
Tertiary qualification in Mechanical or Hydraulic Engineering (or related discipline).

5+ years’ experience managing engineering packages in heavy industry or manufacturing environments.

Strong knowledge of hydraulic systems, project design, construction, and commissioning.

Proven ability to prepare technical documentation, tender specifications, and contracts.

Experience with project controls, budgeting, and schedule management.

Commitment to health, safety, and environmental excellence.

Proficiency in MS Office and MS Project.

Excellent communication skills and ability to work in cross-functional teams.
