Lead Data Engineer | Microsoft Fabric, Cloud Migration & Enterprise Data Modernisation

  • Location: ACT (Onsite)
  • Security Clearance: NV1 Cleared (Mandatory)
  • Contract Length: 12 months + 2 × 12-month extensions (Department discretion)

About the position:

This Lead Data Engineer role supports enterprise-scale data modernisation initiatives aligned to a cloud-first strategy. Large, business-critical datasets and legacy reporting environments are transitioning to Microsoft Fabric, Azure, and AWS-based platforms.

This is not a pure pipeline development role. It is a lead engineering position responsible for scalable architecture design, migration execution, governance uplift, and long-term data platform sustainability.

You will operate within a structured government environment where performance, security, lineage tracking, and data integrity are non-negotiable.

What you’ll do:

  • Design and maintain scalable batch and real-time data pipelines
  • Develop and optimise ETL/ELT workflows using Azure Data Factory and Microsoft Fabric pipelines
  • Build and manage lakehouse, data warehouse, and Delta Lake architectures
  • Implement semantic models within Fabric integrated with Power BI reporting

What we are looking for:

  • 7+ years’ experience delivering enterprise data engineering solutions
  • Strong hands-on expertise with Microsoft Fabric, OneLake, ADLS Gen2, and Azure Data Factory
  • Experience migrating legacy SQL Server / SSAS environments to modern cloud platforms
  • Demonstrated capability implementing RBAC, RLS, encryption, and governance frameworks

Seniority fit:

  • This role suits engineers comfortable leading architectural decisions and migration roadmaps
  • Experience balancing BAU support with large-scale transformation initiatives is expected
  • Confidence working directly with stakeholders on data strategy and reporting transition is important

Technology & environment:

  • Microsoft Fabric (OneLake, Data Engineering, Data Warehouse, Real-Time Analytics)
  • Azure Data Factory, Delta Lake architecture, Dataflows Gen2
  • Power BI integration and semantic modelling
  • Legacy environments including SSAS (Multidimensional) and SQL Server
  • Azure DevOps, Git, CI/CD pipelines
  • Hybrid cloud ecosystem (Azure / AWS)

A quick note before you apply:

  • This role operates within a structured government data environment where migration accuracy and security alignment are critical
  • If your experience has been limited to small-scale analytics solutions without exposure to enterprise data platform migration, this may not align with current needs
  • An active NV1 clearance is mandatory
