Lead Data Engineer – Government Transformation Project
Location: Sydney (Hybrid)
Contract: 12 months with up to 2 x 12-month extensions
Hours: Full-time (40 hours/week)
Security Clearance: Must be eligible for Negative Vetting Level 1 (NV1)


About the Role

A major Australian government agency is undergoing a significant transformation to modernise its financial intelligence and reporting systems. We are seeking an experienced Lead Data Engineer to drive the design, development, and delivery of data ingestion, integration, and analysis platforms.

This role offers a unique opportunity to lead cutting-edge data engineering projects that support national and international efforts to combat financial crime.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, and deployment of robust data pipelines using Apache NiFi, Elasticsearch, and Kibana

  • Collaborate closely with technical teams and governance bodies across the Pacific region

  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineering teams both on-site and remotely

  • Oversee code quality through reviews and contribute to architecture and design decisions

  • Assist delivery leadership with planning, estimations, and agile processes

  • Support testing, deployment, and ongoing platform operations in a secure environment

  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and delivery-focused team culture


What We’re Looking For

  • 10+ years of experience delivering production-grade software solutions

  • Advanced programming skills in Java, Python, or JavaScript

  • Proven experience designing and implementing data ingestion systems with Apache NiFi

  • Hands-on experience with Elasticsearch and Kibana for data analysis and visualisation

  • Graduate degree in computer science or equivalent industry experience

  • Experience leading remote and on-site technical teams, ideally in cross-cultural environments

  • Strong collaboration and communication skills with sensitivity to diverse cultural backgrounds


Desirable

  • Experience working in ICT roles within less technologically advanced regions, especially the Pacific

  • Understanding of the role of Financial Intelligence Units (FIUs) and international financial intelligence cooperation
