Infrastructure Systems Administrator – Defence & Maritime
Location: Central Sydney
Clearance: NV1 (Australian Citizens only)
Salary: $160,000 – $190,000 depending on experience
Our client, a leading defence partner in the maritime domain, is seeking a skilled Infrastructure Systems Administrator to join their team. This role is pivotal in ensuring the stability, security, and scalability of critical defence simulation and fleet battle systems.

Key Responsibilities

Administer and maintain Windows Server 2022 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 systems

Manage Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, and implement system hardening

Configure and optimise Hyper-V and VMware environments
-
Oversee Veeam Backup & Replication, including disaster recovery planning

Configure, monitor, and troubleshoot Cisco switches/routers and FortiGate firewalls
-
Support and secure LAN, WAN, and VPN infrastructure
-
Integrate and support simulation systems using advanced simulation architectures
-
Ensure systems remain compliant with evolving Defence cyber standards

Monitor performance, apply patches, and automate tasks with PowerShell and Bash

Provide Tier 2/3 support and manage incident troubleshooting and resolution

Maintain up-to-date documentation of ICT systems and services

Collaborate with vendors and Defence stakeholders under structured change management
Required Qualifications & Certifications

Certificate IV, Diploma, or higher in IT; or equivalent industry certifications such as:

Microsoft Certified: Windows Server Administrator

Red Hat Certified System Administrator/Engineer (RHCSA/RHCE)

VMware Certified Professional (VCP)
-
Cisco CCNA/CCNP
-
Fortinet NSE 4+
-
Veeam Certified Engineer (VMCE)

CompTIA Security+ or Network+

Essential Skills & Experience
-
Minimum 5 years’ systems administration experience in medium-to-large IT environments

Strong expertise in Windows and/or Linux (RHEL) administration

Proven experience with Cisco networking and FortiGate firewalls

In-depth knowledge of AD, DNS, DHCP, and Group Policy

Hands-on experience with Hyper-V, VMware, and Veeam Backup & Replication

Solid grasp of networking protocols (TCP/IP, VLANs, routing, VPNs, multicast)

Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving ability

Knowledge of cyber security practices and security awareness
-
Excellent communication and collaboration skills
Highly Desirable

Exposure to defence/military IT environments, especially maritime or naval

Experience with simulation standards (DIS/HLA)

Familiarity with Naval Combat Management Systems (2+ years)

Understanding of Navy operations, doctrine, and warfighting principles

Knowledge of C4I systems (e.g., Link16, GCCS)

Proficiency in automation scripting (PowerShell, Bash)
Additional Details

Hours: 40 per week; flexibility required to align with US time zones during exercises (may include overnight work)

Clearance: Must currently hold or be eligible to hold an NV1 Defence clearance
