First Nations Policy & Advice Advisor (IAC) - EL1

Our client is a large, values focussed Federal Government agency responsible for delivering impactful national programs. They are seeking an EL1 Independent Advisor (First Nations) to support the Independent Advisory Council (IAC) by developing high-quality advice and strengthening First Nations perspectives within the Council’s work.

This is a Special Measures role. Applicants must identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples living with disability are also encouraged to apply.

ROLE DETAILS
Location: Geelong, VIC or Nationwide
Contract: Initial term up to 6 months (possible extensions)

Hours: Part time position, 0.6 FTE – 3 days a week

Eligibility: Must be Australian Citizen – This is a Special Measures role. Applicants must identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.

Rate: $602.55 per day + Super

Closes: Friday 12th June
Working style: Predominantly work from home, with some meetings/travel as required

ABOUT THE ROLE
This role supports the IAC in providing independent expert advice to the agency’s Board, with a primary focus on supporting First Nations reference group activities and advice development. You’ll draft advice, lead research and planning, facilitate discussions, and support member capability building, always in plain English and aligned to accessibility expectations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Write formal advice, discussion papers, reports and briefings in plain English for endorsement and submission through the IAC
  • Undertake research, critical analysis and planning to strengthen advice and recommendations
  • Facilitate advice steering groups and present in meetings to progress priorities
  • Support First Nations reference group meetings and related out-of-session meetings (including pre/post briefings and member reports where required)
  • Build culturally safe spaces and contribute to member capability building (mentoring, induction support, capacity sessions)
  • Maintain strong relationships across members, secretariat and stakeholders to progress advice development and outcomes

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

  • Applicants who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander (mandatory – Special Measures)
  • Strong experience writing advice for government audiences in clear, accessible/plain English
  • Strong understanding of First Nations perspectives and the experiences of First Nations people with disability, and how systems impact communities
  • Confident facilitation, stakeholder engagement, and ability to influence in complex environments
  • Comfort working in changing environments, managing competing priorities, and navigating challenging conversations with empathy (trauma-informed approach)
