Our highly regarded Auckland central client has a rare opportunity for an Engineering Capability Lead to join their team. This is a leadership role encompassing hands-on Java development, technical team mentoring and shaping future technology decisions. This position is ideal for someone who still loves to get hands-on with code (circa 30-40%) but thrives when uplifting others, setting engineering standards and supporting organisational technological growth.

Key Responsibilities
- Act as the Engineering Capability Lead/SME for a backend-focused engineering squad
- Contribute ~30-40% to coding, the rest focused on:
- Mentoring and coaching
- Defining and improving engineering standards
- Investigating new technologies and tools
- Collaborating with other Capability Leads and business stakeholders to shape forward-looking tech direction
- Solve complex technical challenges in an environment where reverse-engineering and integration work is key
- Champion strong coding practices, documentation and architecture-level decisions
About You
- 7+ years in backend development – strong Java development experience is essential
- Experience with enterprise or third-party platforms (financial services a plus)
- Comfortable navigating systems with limited source code access
- Solid understanding of DevOps, CI/CD, and modern API/integration patterns
- Familiarity with Azure or cloud environments from a dev point of view
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills – you’re pragmatic, positive and not afraid to speak up
- Experience in an passion for mentoring, continuous improvement and future-focused thinking
