EL1 Assistant Director of Policy

The Opportunity:

Our client is a large community focused Federal Government Agency, currently seeking an EL1 Assistant Director of Policy. The Assistant Director of Policy leads strategic policy initiatives, managing complex projects, advising senior executives, and engaging with government and industry stakeholders. The role demands strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills, plus a solid grasp of government and ministerial processes.

  • 12 month initial contract term with likelihood for extension.
  • $602.55 + Super per day.
  • Based out of Richmond or Geelong (VIC) or Hobart (TAS)
  • Hybrid position (2-3 days WFH)

Responsibilities will include:

  • Lead the development and implementation of strategic policy initiatives aligned with government and agency priorities.
  • Provide strategic policy advice to senior executives and contribute to decision-making processes.
  • Prepare high-quality policy documents, including Cabinet submissions, ministerial briefs, discussion papers, and correspondence.
  • Navigate government processes, including parliamentary inquiries, intergovernmental forums, and ministerial workflows.
  • Conduct research and analysis to inform policy development, including environmental scanning and stakeholder consultation.
  • Manage complex policy projects, including planning, coordination, and delivery of outcomes within tight timeframes.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including other government agencies, industry, and community groups.
  • Represent the agency in interdepartmental committees, working groups, and external forums.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of policy processes, frameworks, and capability within the team.

About you:

  • Australian citizenship is mandatory to be considered eligible to work for this Federal Government Agency.
  • Strong prior background within disability, social policy or social insurance.
  • Strong understanding of public policy development and Australian Government processes, including Cabinet and ministerial operations.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading complex policy projects or initiatives.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear and persuasive policy documents and ministerial briefs.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to synthesise complex information.
  • Proven ability to build productive relationships and influence stakeholders.
  • High level of initiative, sound judgment, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Desirable criteria:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in public policy, political science, economics, law, or a related field (desirable).
  • Experience in a strategic policy role within the public sector.
  • Familiarity with APS Values, Code of Conduct, and the broader policy and political environment.
