
Data Scientist - APS4
Our client is a federal government organisation with offices throughout Australia. Due to growth, they are seeking APS4 Data Scientist to join their team in Richmond or Geelong.
- 12-month initial contract plus 12-month extension
- Hybrid with 3 days per week onsite

The role
The APS4 Data Scientist is an analyst position with responsibilities to support work within a team according to planned priorities. The position will handle technical tasks involving data, considering alternative approaches to account for uncertainty. The position will apply well-established policy, principles, practices and procedures to achieve outcomes that support and contribute to clients’ objectives. The APS4 Data Scientist (Professional Stream) will have contact with stakeholders and will be required to communicate with and provide advice on a range of matters to resolve moderately complex to complex enquiries.
Key duties and responsibilities
- Reporting, analysis and data management activities.
- Extracting, cleansing and preparing data from multiple sources, particularly the data warehouse and advising on appropriate data checks for reasonableness.
- Updating and developing regular performance monitoring.
- Utilising and assisting in designing statistical and mathematical modelling techniques to undertake analytical work on a range of tasks. Including experience monitoring and analyses, data tabulations, preparing public dashboards, running Scheme projection models, scenario testing and other predictive modelling.
- Communicating verbally and in writing to other staff and management the progress of work responsibilities and outcomes of work undertaken.
- Analysing Scheme experience as an input in the assumption setting process for the Scheme projections and other cost analysis.
- Preparation and technical review of tables, charts and commentary for inclusion in the AFSR, QRDM, Board papers and other reporting.(Note): the key responsibilities of the role are based on current priorities and may change over time.
To apply you will need the following skills and experience:
Essential criteria
- Data analytics experience, ideally supporting government policy development, with some exposure to government processes (budget, legislation, policy development, briefs / documents)
- Experience working in a team setting and can operate with minimal guidance from a manager
- Proficient R or Python programming skills including data manipulation and analysis
- Proficient SQL / SAS programming
Desirable criteria
- General understanding of statistical modelling techniques such as Generalised Linear Modelling, or tabular machine learning techniques such as gradient boosting, and how they are used in application
- Some experience around government processes (budget, legislation, policy development, briefs / documents)
- Experience developing dashboards, visualisations and reporting for non-technical stakeholders
