Backend Engineer (Data & Distributed Systems)
Talent International, a leading Australian recruitment firm, have been engaged by our long standing client, a high-performing and fast-growing financial technology firm. We are seeking a Senior Backend Engineer (Data & Distributed Systems) to help build the core data and product infrastructure powering complex, high-value financial decision making.
Role Title: Senior Backend Engineer (Data & Distributed Systems)
Opportunity: Permanent Career Opportunity
Location + WFH Flexibility: Sydney CBD (3-4 days in office, moving toward full-time initially)
Salary: $120,000 – $150,000 + super + high discretionary bonus
Client Industry: Financial Services / FinTech
Interview Process: 4-stage process (intro, technical discussion, coding, final)
Role Details:
* Build and scale the core data platform that underpins complex financial workflows and reporting
* Design and optimise database systems handling high-complexity, multi-source financial data
* Develop distributed workflows and backend systems that automate traditionally manual, high-value processes
* Work directly with founders and domain experts to translate real financial problems into clean, scalable technical solutions
* Own meaningful parts of the product from day one, with direct impact on architecture and direction
* Contribute across the stack, from data pipelines and validation through to product features and client-facing systems
Required Skills and Experiences:
* Strong backend engineering experience in data-intensive or distributed systems environments
* Deep understanding of database design and performance (e.g. PostgreSQL, SQL Server)
* Experience working with complex data models or high-integrity systems
* Strong systems thinking – comfortable with concurrency, workflows, and scaling challenges
* Experience with Python and modern data tooling is highly regarded
* Interest or exposure to financial data (transactions, reporting, valuations) is a strong plus
* 2-4 years experience in high-quality engineering environments (Big Tech, strong startups, or product-led teams preferred)
