Talent International is currently recruiting for an APS6 Senior Policy Officer to work for one of our Federal Government clients based in Surry Hills / Parramatta. The position is a 12-month contract role with the possibility of extension. The role pays $60.26 per hour + Super.

7.5 hours per day and 38 hours per week

Position Overview:

The Senior Policy Officer contributes to the development and implementation of strategic policy initiatives that support the agency’s objectives. The role involves conducting research and analysis, preparing policy advice and briefings, and engaging with stakeholders. The position requires strong analytical and communication skills, and a sound understanding of government processes, including ministerial and parliamentary workflows.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the development of strategic policy advice aligned with government and agency priorities.
  • Prepare high-quality policy documents, including ministerial briefs, submissions, and correspondence.
  • Support the agency’s engagement with ministers, ministerial offices, and parliamentary processes.
  • Conduct research and analysis to support evidence-based policy development.
  • Assist in managing policy projects, including planning, coordination, and reporting.
  • Monitor policy trends, risks, and opportunities relevant to the agency’s work.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Essential criteria

  • Demonstrated experience in developing, implementing, and evaluating public policy, preferably in a First Nations context.
  • Ability to undertake research and analysis to inform evidence-based policy advice and recommendations.
  • Proven ability to think strategically, identify emerging issues, and develop innovative solutions to complex policy challenges.
  • Capacity to align policy work with broader government priorities and departmental objectives.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience in preparing high-quality written materials such as briefs, reports, and ministerial correspondence.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects or policy initiatives, including planning, coordination, and delivery within tight timeframes.
  • Sound knowledge of government decision-making processes, including Cabinet, Budget, and parliamentary procedures.
  • Familiarity with the APS Values, Employment Principles, and Code of Conduct.
  • Understanding of and commitment to working respectfully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, communities, and organisations.

Desirable criteria

  • Ability to interpret and apply data, research, and evaluation findings to inform policy and program decisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor junior staff, contribute to a positive team culture, and support collaborative ways of working.
  • Experience contributing to corporate initiatives or cross-agency working groups.
