Data Engineer

  • 12-month contract with a 12-month extension

We are seeking an experienced Senior Data Engineer to support the delivery and ongoing operation of several data warehouse platforms within a Federal Government environment.

Working across both project delivery and BAU support, you will implement data ingestion solutions, review data models and designs, maintain technical documentation and provide guidance to development teams.

Key responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the design and delivery of new data solutions from initial analysis through to implementation.
  • Develop data dictionaries, release processes and data modelling standards.
  • Build and maintain data ingestion solutions across data lake and cloud environments.
  • Work across Amazon S3, MySQL, OLTP, OLAP and iPaaS platforms.
  • Develop and maintain Data Lake Transformation Metadata.
  • Optimise and tune SQL code to improve performance.
  • Analyse and estimate user requirements and manage work through Jira.
  • Maintain accurate system and technical documentation.
  • Support continuous improvement across coding standards, delivery practices and documentation.
  • Collaborate with data consumers, database developers, testers and IT support teams.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to other team members.

About you:

  • At least three years’ experience in a similar Data Engineering role delivering both project and BAU outcomes.
  • Hands-on experience with data lakes, MySQL, Amazon S3 and iPaaS solutions.
  • At least two years’ experience working with cloud platforms, ideally AWS and Microsoft Azure.
  • Strong SQL development, optimisation and performance-tuning capabilities.
  • Ability to understand business requirements and technical constraints and communicate complex concepts clearly.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills and experience managing relationships across multiple business areas.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment across competing priorities.
  • Experience working within Agile and Waterfall delivery environments.
  • Previous Australian Government experience would be highly regarded.
