Position Title: Project Officer (APS5 & APS6)
Location: Surry Hills, Sydney NSW
Contract Term: 12 months (with potential extension)
Start Date: 9 March 2026 (subject to pre-employment checks)

Role Overview

The Project Officer (APS5/APS6) will support and contribute to the delivery of complex projects within a large Australian Government environment. Working under limited supervision or direction (level dependent), the role involves project coordination, research and analysis, stakeholder engagement, and preparation of high-quality written materials to support organisational objectives.

APS6 roles operate with greater autonomy, complexity, and accountability, including providing specialist advice, managing risks, and contributing to strategic decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

Common Responsibilities (APS5 & APS6)

  • Support project planning, coordination, and delivery in line with approved frameworks

  • Prepare reports, briefs, presentations, and other written documentation

  • Conduct research and analysis to support evidence-based decision-making

  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to resolve enquiries and progress work

  • Monitor project milestones, risks, issues, and deliverables

  • Ensure compliance with legislation, policy, and governance requirements

  • Maintain accurate records and manage information appropriately

Additional Responsibilities – APS6

  • Lead components of projects and manage competing priorities

  • Provide specialist advice and technical expertise to stakeholders and team members

  • Coordinate project reporting, including status updates and exception reporting

  • Assist with budget monitoring, procurement, and contract management

  • Identify, assess, and manage project risks and issues

  • Contribute to strategic planning and continuous improvement initiatives

  • Work with minimal supervision across multidisciplinary teams

Essential Skills & Experience

APS5 Essential Criteria

  • Ability to analyse moderately complex problems and develop practical solutions

  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise work and meet deadlines

  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills

  • Effective stakeholder engagement and liaison capabilities

  • Sound judgement in interpreting and applying legislation and policy

  • Strong planning and coordination skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and similar business systems

Desirable:

  • Experience in an administrative or project support role within government or a large organisation


APS6 Essential Criteria

  • Proven ability to perform in a dynamic, fast-paced environment

  • Experience managing multiple tasks with high accuracy and attention to detail

  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills

  • Demonstrated experience preparing high-quality complex briefs and presentations

  • Ability to clearly distil and communicate complex information

  • Experience engaging with senior internal and external stakeholders in a government context

  • Confidence working independently and collaboratively across teams

  • Ability to manage sensitive information with discretion

Highly Desirable:

  • Experience working in a government department, agency, or public sector environment


Eligibility & Security Requirements

  • Australian citizenship is mandatory (proof required)

  • Successful completion of required pre-employment checks, including:

    • National Criminal History Check

    • NDIS Worker Screening Check (if required)

    • Other relevant checks as determined

Rates (excluding superannuation)

  • APS5: $55.24 per hour

  • APS6: $60.26 per hour
