About the client
Talent is partnering with a Queensland Government department seeking two experienced Right to Information and Privacy professionals for an initial four-month contract.
Based in Brisbane, you will join a specialist team responsible for supporting the department’s compliance with the Right to Information Act 2009 and Information Privacy Act 2009.
Opportunities are available at both Senior and Principal levels, allowing us to consider candidates with established operational experience as well as those capable of managing complex matters and guiding other team members.
About the role
You will manage a range of RTI, information access and privacy matters while providing clear, practical advice to departmental officers and members of the public.
The roles will involve delegated decision-making, legislative interpretation, Privacy Impact Assessments, privacy complaints and data breaches. At the Principal level, you will also manage more complex matters and provide guidance and mentoring to other team members.
Responsibilities
- Manage legislative and non-legislative requests for access to departmental information and documents
- Interpret and apply the Right to Information Act 2009, Information Privacy Act 2009 and other relevant legislation
- Exercise delegated decision-making powers and prepare clear, comprehensive statements of reasons
- Manage matters involving subpoenas, non-party disclosures and other information access requests
- Conduct and support Privacy Impact Assessments, identifying privacy risks and recommending practical mitigation strategies
- Provide advice regarding privacy complaints and data breaches, including obligations under the Mandatory Notification of Data Breach scheme
- Develop and review RTI and privacy policies, procedures, guidance materials and tools
- Develop and deliver training that communicates complex RTI and privacy principles in accessible language
- Build productive relationships with internal stakeholders, government agencies and regulatory bodies
- At the Principal level, manage complex matters and support the capability and development of other team members
Requirements
- Demonstrated experience applying Queensland RTI and information privacy legislation, or equivalent legislation in another jurisdiction
- Experience managing information access applications and preparing high-quality statements of reasons
- Strong legislative interpretation, analytical and decision-making skills
- Experience conducting risk assessments, with Privacy Impact Assessment experience highly regarded
- Knowledge of privacy complaints, privacy breaches and associated notification requirements
- Ability to manage competing priorities and meet statutory deadlines
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to explain complex legislative and privacy matters clearly to different audiences
- For the Principal-level opportunity, experience managing complex cases and mentoring or guiding team members will be highly regarded
- Experience assessing privacy risks associated with technology, metadata or complex data holdings would be advantageous
- Ability to complete a criminal history check
