
AI Ethicist
- Initial 60-day contract with up to 2 x 60-day extensions available
- Canberra, Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney or Brisbane location
- Must hold or be eligible for a Baseline Security Clearance
- Expertise in AI ethics, governance frameworks, risk assessment, and ethical advisory in technology programs
The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence has created both opportunities and challenges for government. This role is at the forefront of ensuring AI technologies are adopted responsibly, ethically, and in alignment with public sector values. You will provide expert guidance to support the responsible delivery of AI-enabled services, ensuring outcomes are transparent, fair, and accountable.
Your work will contribute directly to strategic priorities, including:
- Supporting the Automation and AI Branch to deliver agreed use cases for the 2025-26 financial year and beyond.
- Uplifting ethical capabilities within the agency to integrate with and underpin long-term strategic priorities.
- Aligning initiatives with the Customer, Technology, and Data Foundations themes
- Advancing the vision for Technology and Transformation
- Contributing to the agency’s Automation and Artificial Intelligence Strategy

Your duties will include:
- Providing early-stage guidance on ethical risks in AI and technology-enabled initiatives
- Supporting the development of assurance processes and tools to assess AI ethical risks
- Conducting ethical assessments to validate and strengthen governance outcomes
- Advising on and uplifting enterprise ethics frameworks and processes
- Delivering training, workshops, and mentoring to build agency-wide ethical literacy
- Representing the ethics perspective at a strategic level across automation and AI initiatives
Skills and experience we are looking for:
- Proven expertise in AI ethics, responsible technology use, and ethical governance
- Ability to influence and guide senior stakeholders on ethical decision-making
- Experience delivering training and capability uplift in ethics and technology
- Exceptional communication skills and ability to act as a thought leader in ethics
