Our client is a federal government organisation with offices throughout Australia. Due to growth, they are seeking an AI Ethicist to join their team in their Melbourne CBD office.

  • 3-month initial contract to the 31/12/2025 with contract extensions
  • New role due to demand

The role:

The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology has created a clear need for our client to understand and test these capabilities, and to utilise those capabilities responsibly and ethically to provide improved outcomes for staff and customers. Due to this, they wish to engage an Ethicist to provide expert guidance on the ethical implications of AI use and technology more broadly, ensuring alignment with public sector values and human rights obligations.

Additionally, this expertise will assist in establishing clear and effective governance and assurance frameworks that promote transparency, fairness and accountability in AI-enabled systems and the delivery of the agency’s programs and services more broadly.

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide early-stage guidance to initiative owners, identifying ethical risks and supporting integration of ethical considerations into service and program design.
  • Support the agency in the development and design of relevant assurance processes and tools to assess AI ethical risks and,
  • Support the agency to assess the outputs from those processes and tools, offering expert ethical assessments to validate and strengthen findings.
  • Contribute to the agency’s broader ethical posture by advising on, uplifting, and establishing new enterprise ethics frameworks and processes.
  • Deliver day-to-day training, workshops, and mentoring to uplift ethical literacy and confidence across the agency.
  • Act as the authoritative ethics voice for the automation and AI portfolio, providing specialist advice and influencing strategic direction.
