AI Cyber Security & Controls Engineer | AI Governance, Cyber Security Controls & Microsoft Purview

  • Location: ACT-Based (Onsite – Mandatory)
  • Security Clearance: NV1-Cleared (Mandatory)
  • Contract Length: 12 Months + 2 * 12 Months Extensions (Based on the Department’s sole discretion)

About the Position:

AI creates new capability. It also creates a different set of security, privacy and control challenges.

This role sits directly at that intersection.

You’ll lead the practical application of AI governance and cyber security controls, helping ensure AI technologies can be adopted securely and responsibly across a complex enterprise ICT environment. The work spans AI risk assessment, governance frameworks, security standards and policy, but importantly, it also moves into the technical implementation of those controls.

A key part of the role is translating emerging AI risks including data leakage, prompt injection, model manipulation and unauthorised AI usage into practical safeguards across Microsoft 365 and associated platforms.

This is where the role stands apart: it needs someone who can connect AI governance, cyber security and policy with hands-on controls engineering rather than operating solely within one of those disciplines.

What You’ll Do:

  • Develop and continuously improve AI governance, security standards and control frameworks aligned with cyber security, privacy, risk and compliance requirements.
  • Assess AI use cases and emerging threats, providing practical recommendations for secure and responsible AI deployment.
  • Design, implement and maintain AI-related security and data protection controls across Microsoft 365, Purview and associated platforms.
  • Work across technical teams, architects and policy stakeholders to translate AI risks and requirements into actionable enterprise controls.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Experience across AI governance, technology risk, cyber security governance or information security, with a strong understanding of responsible AI, privacy and data protection.
  • Hands-on experience implementing cyber security and compliance controls within Microsoft 365, particularly Microsoft Purview, DLP and information protection technologies.
  • Ability to assess AI risks and translate governance, security, ethical and legislative requirements into practical technical controls.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills, including the ability to bridge conversations between technical teams, architects, policy makers and external partners.

Technology & Environment:

  • Microsoft Purview DSPM for AI, DLP & Information Protection
  • Microsoft Defender for Cloud Apps & Copilot Governance
  • AI Governance, Assurance, Risk & Security Controls
  • PSPF, ISM, Essential Eight & NIST

A Quick Note Before You Apply:

This isn’t purely an AI policy/GRC role, nor is it a traditional cyber engineering position with AI added to the title.

The stronger fit is someone who can move between both worlds: understanding AI governance and emerging risks, then helping design and implement the controls that make responsible AI adoption practical within an enterprise environment.

Experience with Microsoft Fabric, Azure AI Foundry, Power Platform, Copilot Studio, AWS or third-party generative AI/LLM platforms is desirable rather than mandatory.

Applicants must be Australian Citizens, hold a minimum NV1 Security Clearance.
