Deciding when to hire new staff can be a major challenge for IT&T employers. Here are a few signs that it is or isn’t the right time.

Hiring a new IT&T employee can be a tricky process at the best of times. After all, it’s never easy to find somebody with the right qualifications, the right skills, and the right personality to fit in with your business and take it to the next level. Those aren’t the only challenges though – there’s also the question of when to start looking for new staff. Begin the process too early, and you may end up hiring somebody before they’re required. Start too late, and you’ll have a period of insufficient cover, which can negatively impact your bottom line.

In order to strike the right balance, there are a few tell-tale signs to look out for. These will tell you when it’s time to ramp up your search, and when it may be better to wait, or explore other options.

1. A big project approaching

For many industries – IT&T among them – the need for additional staff is often project-based. With large jobs requiring more employees than may currently be on the books.This is especially true in specialty areas such as telecommunications or cybersecurity, where existing employees can’t simply be repurposed. To avoid finding yourself in the position of not having the right workforce to tackle an important task, recruiters should be aware of all projects in the pipeline, and have a thorough understand of who will be required.

This same strategy also applies to changes within a business, such as the roll out of a new service or product. If you know that specialist staff will be needed to take charge of these offerings, it’s best to get started on the recruitment process as soon as possible.

2. Planning for growth

Growth doesn’t happen overnight. Instead, businesses typically find that their workload and profits increase by small increments over time. This is obviously a great positive, but if not looked at closely, it can occasionally result in overloaded employees who are doing far more than they should be. Not only will this affect the quality of staff performance, it may force some of your best employees out the door as well.

To avoid this nightmare scenario, make sure you’re well aware of the different volumes of work throughout your business, and be prepared to start hiring when you notice increases.

3. Allow time for skills shortages

Another common reason to start looking for an IT&T candidate early is to get ahead of the challenges associated with securing talent in fields with significant skills shortages. As the IT&T sector continues to grow at an incredible rate, several fields are becoming very competitive for employers, with experienced workers able to command large salaries from a litter of opportunities.

This can make finding certain members of IT&T staff very difficult, so as soon as you know a position needs to be filled in one of these areas, it’s best to start the process as soon as possible. In certain situations, such as when you’re not sure if an existing employee will leave, you can still start the hiring process on a contractor basis, and then move to secure services full time when required.
