Steve Wozniak’s Speech From The Talent Unleashed Awards

”Hi to all of you over there in Sydney. Hope you’re enjoying the event and I’m sorry I can’t be with you. How’s that Opera House looking?

I’m delighted to be involved again this year as a judge for the Talent Unleashed Awards. The quality of the entries seems to get stronger as does the geographical spread which includes Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, and the UK. This really is a global event although when are you guys at Talent going to let us Americans into the competition? If we can let Jarrod Hayne in to the NFL then surely you guys can let us into the Unleashed Awards. Maybe next year eh?

It was really enjoyable to review such a great array of business ideas, disruptive companies, and inspiring business leaders. At times it was quite moving to see what some of you have been working on.

It was a great to see so much new talent getting discovered as result of the Talent Unleashed Awards. The ideas were so diverse and deserving of recognition so well and congratulations to you and I think we all want to thank Talent, Richard Earl, and his team for bringing these awards to life, nice work guys!

It’s a wild ride getting an idea off the ground and creating great companies which are changing things for the better. We need to highlight these people that work in this incredible industry right now and that’s why I’m involved in the Unleashed Awards. I have to highlight a certain bravery that comes with innovation. Doing something for the very first time is difficult. Once it’s been done once, it can look easy. But you have to remember that the first time breaking through that barrier is extremely difficult and should not be underestimated. After all, its awards like the Talent Unleashed Awards that celebrate the bravery that comes with innovation.

At Apple my goal wasn’t to make a ton of money. It was to build good computers. And so I say to all of you with your great ideas and businesses to build the best product or service you can that in turn will create sustainable companies for the long term. Look at Apple, look at Virgin. Even Talent have been going 20yrs this week – Happy Birthday by the way guys! If you are in this to get rich quick then you are unlikely to experience success or fulfilment.

I see that one of my quotes used in this program is ‘’Wherever smart people work, doors are unlocked’’. This is so true and can be applied to the general start up community so I urge every region participating in the Unleashed Awards (and especially Australia) to create environments where great ideas and conversations can flow.

Well done again to all the entries and finalists. And remember – if you weren’t successful this year then make sure you come back stronger next year.

I’ll now leave it to my fellow judge Sir Richard Branson to announce the winners.

Here’s to the crazy ones!”
