The business world is competitive and applying for a new job can be intimidating. That said, there are plenty of ways for you to separate yourself from the rest of the pack. Here are seven simple interview tips for the next time you are applying for a job:

1. Be positive

Nobody wants to hire an employee that brings negative energy into the office. It’s important that you give off a positive vibe for the duration of your interview. Walk in the door with a smile and be confident that you are the man (or woman) for the job. Offer the interviewer a firm handshake and sit up straight in your chair.

2. Stay positive

If you don’t hear back from people right away, there’s no need to panic. Remain confident that you impressed the interviewer and give them a little time to respond. Don’t pester the office you just interviewed at with too many phone calls or emails, and if you’re not the right person for one job, have faith that there’s another out there better suited for you.

3. Practise punctuality

Don’t let your potential new employer think you will be the employee that shows up late to the office. Be sure you arrive on time and ready to go – starting with your interview. Better yet, try to get to your interview site a little earlier than expected.

4. Dress the part

The last thing you want to do is show up for an interview looking like a slob. Wake up a little earlier or prepare the night before to look your best. Men should sport a clean-shaven face and both men and women should arrive to interviews in professional attire. Remember: always dress for the job you want, not the one you have.

5. Be honest

Too many people embellish their resumes to the point that they aren’t truthful. Be sure you talk about relevant experience you’ve had and discuss how you’ll use it in your new job. The important thing is to demonstrate that you will add value to an organisation soon after you’re hired.

6. Listen!

You’re surely going to answer a lot of questions, but make sure you’re actively listening as well. Take a vested interest in what your interviewer is saying to give better answers and show that your mind isn’t anywhere but in the room.

7. Make a plan for the next step

One of the final things you should do at an interview is set a plan to communicate with your potential employer. Ask whether he or she would prefer an email or phone call, and mention when you’ll follow up. That said, make sure you follow up when you say you will!
